Authentic Black Dolls
There has long been a search for African-Americans for find dolls that looked just like them. Some may say that the color of dolls is rather insignificant and that a doll is just a doll. But authentic black dolls play a significant roll in helping to raise the self-esteem in young black girls today.
It is important for them to see images that look resemble their features so they won’t grow up thinking that one color is better than the other. Many of the features that are present on white dolls are not representative of black women. Missing are the full lips, the kinky hair, brown eyes, and dark chocolate skin. This will enable them to form their own ideas of what beauty is instead of having to choose by default.
As I began my research I saw that black dolls are highly sought after by many black girls and women from around the country. You can pick up black collectible dolls, black porcelain dolls or black antique dolls at many online stores. The dolls clearly represent the true to life physical features of African-Americans. Although these dolls are not ubiquitous they are much more readily found online than in many toy stores.
Here are some of the black dolls I found that are popular:
My First Baby Black – This is an all fabric doll that safe for all ages and just as the name implies is meant to be your baby’s first doll.
Black Babipounce by Corolle Features a soft vinyl head, and plush arms, legs and body. Usually for babies up to 24 months.
Black Learn To Dress Doll – A skill building doll for black children. They comes in a boy and girl version. Some skills taught are buckling and zipping. Recommended age one year and a half on up.
Black Muffin In Dungarees – This is from the Gotz baby dolls line and is 13″ and recommended for ages 3 years and up.
It great to see that more toy manufacturers are taking the effort to appeal other races with the making of their dolls. A black doll deserves just as much shelf space as any other doll.
